Coming from Los Angeles the last thing I thought I’d be learning about on this trip was surfing. Marquette, MI not only has surf, but a surf community.

Lake Superior is the largest of the five Great Lakes of North America and during the winter is a main spot for wave-catchers who ride year-round. Unlike the ocean, there are no noticeable tides or substantial currents in Lake Superior. Its waves are hard to predict.

I talked to Brent Centracco about the local surf community, and not only is Brent a surfer. He is the owner of Chopstix Surf, where he makes custom boards for those wanting to ride the waves.
